How to Add a Trendline in Excel

Adding a trendline helps you identify patterns in your data and forecast future values. This guide shows you how to insert one and display its mathematical equation.

Select your chart
Click on the chart where you want to add the trendline to activate the Chart Design and Format tabs.

Open the Trendline menu
Go to the 'Chart Design' tab, click 'Add Chart Element' in the far left, and select 'Trendline'.

Select a trendline type (e.g., Linear) or click 'More Trendline Options' at the bottom of the menu.

In the 'Format Trendline' pane that appears on the right, check the box labeled 'Display Equation on chart'.

You can also right-click any data series in your chart and select 'Add Trendline' directly from the context menu.

FAQ

Why is the 'Trendline' option greyed out?

Trendlines cannot be added to certain chart types like Pie or Radar charts. Ensure you are using a Scatter or Line chart.
