ATANH

Returns the inverse hyperbolic tangent of a number.

This function works the same in Google Sheets as it does in Excel — same syntax and arguments.

Syntax

ATANH(number)

The ATANH function calculates the inverse hyperbolic tangent of a given number. The number must be between -1 and 1 (exclusive).

=ATANH(0.5)

Result: 0.549306144

Calculates the inverse hyperbolic tangent of 0.5.

=ATANH(-0.1)

Result: -0.100335348

Calculates the inverse hyperbolic tangent of -0.1.

What happens if the number is outside the range -1 to 1?

The function will return a #NUM! error because the inverse hyperbolic tangent is not defined for those values.
