How to Add a Secondary Axis in Excel

When your data series have vastly different ranges, a secondary axis allows you to visualize both clearly on one chart.

Select your chart
Click on the chart that contains the data series you want to move to a secondary axis.

Open Format Data Series
Right-click the specific data series and select 'Format Data Series' from the context menu.

Select Secondary Axis
In the 'Series Options' tab of the pane, select the 'Secondary Axis' radio button.

Consider changing the chart type of the secondary series to a line chart to make it stand out from the primary bars.

Why would I use a secondary axis?

It is used when one data series has much larger values than another, preventing the smaller values from appearing flat on the chart.
